Creating Postcards

I really liked the project idea that Flint talked about on page 243. The idea was that students make postcards corresponding to the text that they have recently read. On one side the student reflects on the theme of the text and write additional comments about how they felt while on the other side they illustrate something they remember from the material. I really liked how this project incorporated art into a reading comprehension strategy. I feel like teachers often get so caught up in teaching the materials and creating successful students that they forget that when you make the material personal to the student (ie: having them draw if they like drawing) it helps them make connections it and remember it.

  1. This is a fabulous activity! I actually remember doing something like this when I was younger. Sometimes it can be so routine and boring simply reading a book and answering questions. This way, students can express what they have learned in a unique way and have fun by drawing and coloring, expressing themselves in a way other than comprehending and relaying the information on a piece of paper in question/answer format.

  2. I really connected with this example as well - it reminded me of one of my favorite assignments in middle school. My literature teacher had every student write literature letters. These letters were written to an imaginary pen pal, and we we were supposed to explain what we were reading and how it connected to us. It was really creative and fun, and really helped my classmates and I to engage in the short novels we were reading.
