Guided Reading

I enjoyed watching the guided reading video tapes. I thought the kids seemed engaged but I also wondered how much of that was for the taping and how a real class room would respond. It all seemed very scripted and almost like a sales pitch. Did anyone else get this impression? Maybe I am being overly sensitive. I think guided reading could be a very useful activity for your class. I can see all the different ways you could incorporate it into your room. I thought the magnetic letters to show the variations on words was a great idea and I will definitely be using that in the future. I like that it is in small groups so it is more interactive for all those in the group.

  1. I still can't Post my own - do you guys know how I can be a contributor? I am going to talk to Dr. Handsfield this week so I can post for real and not just through comments! ha

This example of how to engage students, cutting, really linked (in my mind) to Ray's description of reading aloud. Reading aloud helps students to hear language, and to learn what good craft sounds like. I particularly like the description of this activity because it incorporates several literacy strategies. I loved how this activity forced students to read silently, aloud, and with peers. This activity would really engage students in these different types of literacy - and not to mention each student they discuss with will bring their own funds of knowledge to contribute and collaborate.

  2. I agree with you Kasha, it did cross my mind how much of the responses were due to the presence of the cameras and how much was real. However I thought that the activities were very beneficial and interactive as well. I think that the teachers selected a good set of books that helped to engage children and help get them thinking outside of what was written directly in the text. I also think that with the wide variety of activities that you can use guided reading with in the classroom, it is a very useful activity.

  3. I definitely see what you're saying about the idea that they were behaving well due to the cameras. And you're right, it did seem like a sales pitch at certain points. I guess we just have to accept that every one has an agenda & they obviously want their product to look good so that people use their system. I do believe that the Fountas and Pinelle system is good though.
